An Introduction to Self-Employment and Entrepreneurship (Small Business Basic Training)
Are you already in business for yourself, contemplating self employment, or thinking of a home-based business? Want to know more about the dynamics of small business ownership? This is the course for you.

This series of eight sessions is designed to help you make the crucial decisions about whether or not to embark on a business ownership career, or take your existing business to the next level. Experienced entrepreneurs and guest speakers will give you the information you need to connect you with the resources and experts that can help you succeed.

This class will meet Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30am to 12:00pm. Participants are expected to attend all eight sessions.

About the Instructors and Guest Speakers

Bob Cohen is the Executive Director of the Braintree Center for Business Innovation, a technology business incubator and entrepreneurship training center in Mansfield. He is a former radio station owner, licensed insurance agent, and since 1987 has served as an adjunct faculty member of The Ohio State University at Mansfield and at Wooster.

 Paula Cohen is dedicated to teaching people about small business ownership.  She once owned an award-winning Chicago restaurant and is now an adjunct faculty member at North Central State College.

 Roger Daugherty, a thirty year veteran of business education programs, including the Ashland County West Holmes Career Center is an expert in small business management and record keeping systems who now works with the Ohio Business Institute.

.Kristen Henthorn is a financial counselor with Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Central Ohio.  She is an expert on personal and business credit and credit reporting.

 Nancy Hudson is an OSU extension specialist in family resource management from the Wooster center, with more than 20 years experience helping individuals, families, and businesses to better manage their financial resources.

 Brenda Leeman has more than twenty years of experience in accounting and tax preparation including teaching basic accounting, computer classes, and Excel for Madison Adult Education.  She is the owner of Integrated Business Solutions, a full-service bookkeeping, payroll, and tax preparation firm.

 Jim Lovelace is an expert in Internet-based commerce and e-marketing. He is the owner of Wired Ohio, a full-service web-hosting and website design company. He is also a specialist in employee training.

 Robert Stimpert is the Director of the Manufacturing Competitiveness Initiative at Ashland University.  He is a graduate of The Ohio State University and received an MBA from Ashland University.  He is a former Senior Steel Executive and operates a small farm.

 


Registration and Payment Information
Investment in the program is $125 per participant. Participants are encouraged to purchase a copy of Self Employment: From Dream to Reality, the workbook keyed to the course content.

Participants also have the opportunity to pre-order a copy of two other helpful books:

Self Employment: From Dream to Reality, 151 pages, $16. This workbook teaches basic self employment
and business skills. It was developed for people who have little or no experience running a business, are trying to decide if their business idea is sound, or need to develop a business or financial plan. Participants in the Small Business Basic Training course will find it helpful to be able to complete workbook activities coordinated with each of the eight sessions.

Financial Education Guide to Living on a Limited Income, 76 pages, $10. If you are contemplating self-employment because of a recent lay-off or retirement, this book will help you cope with a reduced income which, during the early stages of a business start-up, may be a necessity. Topics include setting spending priorities, cutting expenses, and dealing with creditors and lenders.

Guide to Securing Your Financial Future, 139 pages, $20. This book will help you learn the basics of personal financial investing. In conjunction with starting a new business, or independently, you can develop an action plan that incorporates your savings goals. With over 175 definitions, this book will expand your personal investment vocabulary and start you on your way to a well-planned financial future, including wealth building and retirement planning.
