Farm Animal Legislation Coming to OH Print E-mail

Do not be fooled by Proposition 2 this year when the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) places a citizen referendum on the November 2010 ballot to ban: sow gestation stalls, veal crates, and battery cages for layer hens. Disguised as a proposition to prevent farm animal cruelty, it actually will cripple the agricultural industry in Ohio. Amanda Denes, Director of the Ohio Farm Bureau Organization that covers Erie, Huron and Lorain Counties stated at the Northeast Ohio Agribusiness Forum on June 26th in Ashland, Ohio that, "animal agriculture is a $2.9 billion annual industry and if the legislation is passed animal agricultural could leave Ohio. She said it would also increase food prices." Also, it should be noted that the Humane Society of the United States is not the organization that runs your local humane society shelters. The Humane Society of the United States is pressuring law makers in Ohio to pass legislation similar to Proposition 2 in California.
